Why You Need an Australian Visa
Why Apply for a Work Visa or Student Visa?
Entry to Australia is only possible with a valid visa. An Australian visa is either granted electronically (e.g., ETA – Electronic Travel Authority) or issued as a label in your passport by an Australian Immigration officer.
Visas are essential for lawful entry and stay in Australia. Choosing the right visa is critical and should reflect your intended purpose of travel, whether it be for work, study, tourism, or permanent residency.
The visa label or digital record outlines your visa status, entry conditions, and how long you can stay in Australia.
Important: A visa gives permission to travel to, enter, and/or remain in Australia. Being in Australia without a valid visa makes you an unlawful non-citizen.
Unlawful non-citizens may face severe consequences such as detention, deportation, or exclusion periods (up to 3 years) that affect future applications for temporary visas including student, visitor, and working holiday visas.
General Visa Requirements
Applicants for most types of Australian visas must meet several important requirements:
- Pass the Public Interest Criteria (PIC), including health checks and character tests (Schedule 4 of the Migration Regulations).
- Comply with Special Return Criteria, including bans or exclusion periods (Schedule 5 of the Regulations).
- Some visas require sponsorship by an approved sponsor.
- Certain visas may require an Assurance of Support and a possible security bond.
- Some applications involve paying a second instalment visa application charge.
